The incident, in which the driver was found to have had a revoked license, occurred around 3 p.m. near Mavis Tires in Hopewell Junction, East Fishkill Police said.
Upon arriving, police located an 11-year-old girl from New Windsor in Orange County.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the girl was crossing the highway when she was struck by the vehicle, a 2006 Toyota sedan which was southbound on Route 82, police said.
The driver of the car was identified as 29-year-old Alberto Ramirez-Castro of Hopewell Junction, according to police.
The girl was taken by Mobile Life Paramedics to Westchester Medical Center where she was being treated for her injuries.
Ramirez-Castro's driving privileges were found to be revoked and suspended for a prior alcohol-related conviction and failing to pay administrative fees, police said. He was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, both misdemeanors.
He was released on his own recognizance pending his return to East Fishkill Court.
Route 82 was closed at the scene until about 5:45 p.m. while officers conducted their investigation.
